From Guatemala to Delaware to visit grandma Naomi and grandpa Herb,. Several days in London, Several days in Cologne, to celebrate grandma Sasha's birthday (with a Yo Yo Ma concert), and onto Istanbul, and Yerevan, Southern Armenia, Northern Armenia, then a trip around Turkey, a day at EFES and back to Istanbul

This is the itinerary of our trip to Armenia and Turkey September-October2009. This page will take you through the trip and take you to many photos.

... Istanbul for a couple of days, then a midnight flight to Yerevan.  Sona rented us an apartment for a week and we arrived into Independence Day celebrations in Armenia.  A trip to the south of Armenia, all the way to the Iranian border, another trip to the north of the country near Georgia.  Ancient monasteries, old towns, thousands of years of history, a luxurious guided tour by our daughter Sona!  In such a small country, we managed to drive close to 1,000 miles.

This is the Khor Virap monastery, with Mount Ararat behind ... Armenia is old and amazing.  The mountain is in Turkey, the monastery in Armenia.

Spectacular Noravank, in a deep valley, overloloking a steeep rocksides all around. The monks were smart onugh open an excellent restaurant, looking over the cilffs.

Noravank Monastery, southern Armenia.   And the monks were smart to install a good restaurant right next to it.

Aspendos in Turkey, near Antalya, was built in the 2nd Century A.D.  Some guidebooks claim it is the best preserved Roman amphitheater either in Aisa Minor or the World!.  It's certainly amazing, and it was hot and sunny when we visited it.

Efes. Library of Celsos, 135 A.D.

After Armenia, we flew, with Sona, back to Istanbul and on to Antalya on the south coast of Turkey.  Here we picked up a car for a week to see various Greek and Roman ruins, stay a few of nights in a timeshare, and several in hotels.  After a visit to the famous ruins at Efes (which, aside from the Greek temples, is also our favourite restaurant the past 25 years in London, "Efes"), another flight from Izmir back to Istanbul for several more days of sightseeing.  Excellent Armenian and Turkish food.  We also hope to bring about a major improvement in relations between Turkey and Armenia.  At the end, Sona flew back to Yerevan and we to London, Miami and back home.

We have 2,735 photos from Jenny's, Sona's and Barbara's cameras, so selecting the best 100 is taking a while, but right now, there are some on each page ... click on pages below.  We will be adding photos for a while ... please visit again, as we add more ...
