12 September 2012, Wednesday                                                              Sacred Valley

At 09:30hs visit the town of Chinchero, a picturesque Indian village high up on the windswept plains of Anta at 3762 meters above sea level and one of the twelve Andean communities that still keep the traditional social structure and urban designs from Inca times. In Chinchero, the traditional pre-Hispanic weaving techniques and natural dyes are an art form that has been revived and given the value it deserves by Andean weavers who capture motifs from everyday life and their surrounding natural environment.

Visit Nilda Callañaupa Workshop in the Andean village of Chinchero. Nilda learned to weave as a child while tending the flocks in the fields of her village. When she was a teenager, Nilda worked with researchers on preserving the traditional themes and techniques of weaving in the Andean community. As an adult, Nilda traveled extensively to the U.S. to organize weaving exhibits and workshops in several universities and the Textile Museum of Washington D.C. Nilda offers an indigenous, multi-faceted perspective on the arts and will be happy to lead a relaxed, fascinating workshop on traditional back strap weaving techniques and a discussion on the role of weaving in a contemporary Andean culture.

Meet Andean weaver Nilda Callañaupa, who demonstrates local techniques and discusses weaving's role in contemporary Andean culture as well as various aspects of arts and crafts: spinning, weaving, knitting, braiding and dying with the natural fibres of our Andean highlands.

Textile systems developed in Peru over the millennia represent a treasury of techniques rare in the world. Most remain unknown outside of Peru. They are passed on, not by writing, but by the Andean process of person-to-person communication, by watching and practicing.

A Pic nic will be served for lunch.

On our way to Maras we will drive through a patchwork of fields that blend into the vistas of the snow-capped peaks of the Cordilleras Urubamba and Vilcabamba. The colonial village of Maras was the center of exploitation of the nearby salt pans dating from pre-Columbian times. Today we can see locals harvesting the mineral in much the same way as their ancestors have been doing for the past 400 years.  Moray is a curious site with a group of terraces positioned in concentric circles. Apparently it was utilized as an agricultural laboratory where many species of crops from different altitudes were brought to be domesticated.

15 September 2012, Saturday                                                                                 Cusco

In the morning enjoy a walking city tour of the colonial city of Cusco with its beautiful streets, the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas and the Santo Domingo Temple & Koricancha, a Dominican Church and convent built on the foundations of the Koricancha, the Incas principal religious building dedicated to the worship of the sun.

Continue to the Pre-Columbian Art Museum, an Inca ceremonial court around 1450 A.D.

This extraordinary Cusco historic monument holds the only museum in Peru dedicated to rebound the arts of ancient peruvian cultures.

The collection of 450 master pieces date from 1250 B.C to.1532 A.D. They were selected among 45,000 objects located at the storages of the Larco Museum in Lima.

The exhibition uses texts in spanish, english and french to emphasize the artistic context of the collection displayed in 11 showrooms inside the museum. Its galleries were designed to meet the highest standards of modern museography enabling the visitors to admire Pre-Columbian art in its best expression.

In the afternoon, visit the magnificent Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which overlooks the city of Cusco. You will be impressed by the beauty and monumental scale of this important Inca construction. The main ramparts consist of three massive parallel walls zigzagging together for 400m which were designed to make any attacker expose his flanks. Sacsayhuaman played an important part in the final defeat of the Inca Empire by the Spanish.  Continue to Qenqo, one of the finest examples of artfully carved rock showing complex patterns of steps, seats, geometric reliefs and a puma design; the red fortress of Puca Pucara, and Tambomachay, commonly referred to as the Inca baths. The excellent quality of the stonework suggests that its use was restricted to the higher nobility, who maybe only used the baths on ceremonial occasions.

Enjoy the activities at your choice in Titilaka (shared).

All excursions include transport with driver and are guided by one of our trained professional interpreters in Spanish or English. Interpreters in other languages may be available upon request, subject to additional charge.

Rowing through the reeds (1/4 day)

Take a paddle boat excursion through the totora reeds near the hotel. The totora reeds are aquatic plants used by the locals for different purposes ranging from construction to food. Just like land, the reed areas are divided among the villagers, who every so often harvest them for various uses. The reeds also provide a special ecosystem for birds such as wrens, grebes, moorhens and egrets.

Inca Anatawi (1/4 day)

Your excursion starts with a ride by car towards the south of Titilaka, then a light ascent on foot to a rocky mountain to reach the remains of an Inca Trail, where some polished stone seats were finely carved in large rocks, a vantage point for enjoying the panoramic view of the vast lake. After the descent, visit the local community for a brief rest and view their colorful textiles.

Socca beach (1/4 day)

Walk east of Titilaka hotel, through a peninsula to visit the rustic town community of Socca. Continue the excursion through the broad sandy shores of Lake Titicaca, between wetlands and farms where you can appreciate the agricultural practices of the locals and learn about their customs; a place to relax and behold the unique sceneries around the highest navigable lake of the world.

Bird watching (1/4 day)

Lake Titicaca is part of the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands, a conservation and protection of the Wetlands and its wildlife, where you can see more than 60 species, including waterfowl, shore birds and some others that are found inland. Depending on the season, you can see migratory birds such as flamingos, shorebirds, aquatic birds, among others, and resident birds like a variety of ducks, herons and grebes. From the Titilaka Hotel one can see the Titicaca grebes (Rollandia microptera); endemic birds to the Titicaca Basin (Peru and Bolivia) in their natural habitat, which is in danger of extinction according to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). The Bird Watching route shall be determined according to the season and location by monitoring the places frequented by these birds.

Uros (1/2 day)

Enjoy a guided visit to Uros floating isles on Lake Titicaca, located on the National Reserve of Titicaca on the Bay of Puno. Made from totora reeds, these Islands are home of the Uros community which pre-dates the Incan civilization. They call themselves kot-suña or people of the lake who claim to have "black blood", as they are consequently immune to the cold and consider themselves the owners of the lake and its waters. They continue living on the islands by fishing, weaving and now, tourism.

Titilaka arch (1/2 day)

Take an introductory walk around the Titilaka refuge. In this excursion, see the community lifestyle adjacent to the hotel, observing residents in their daily tasks. Then ascend towards a stone arch, which is at the top of a hill from where you can see the landscape, a magnificent view of the lake, the community within and the idyllic environment.

Taquile (1/2 day)

Take a boat ride to the island of Taquile, where you can see the beautiful mountain ranges of Cordillera Real of Bolivia and its snow peaks. This traditional island is inhabited by islanders of Quechua origin, as opposed to the majority of population of Puno who are of Aymara origin. Taquile lives in its own world, completely detached from the rest of the world, maintaining their ancient Quechua traditions. Its scenery is stunning, red soil in contrast with the intense blue of the lake, the sky and a striking background of snowcapped mountains of the Cordillera Real. On the higher part of the island are remains of ancient stone buildings, somewhat like quarters and roads.

Sillustani (1/2 day)

Enjoy a guided excursion to Sillustani, a peninsula facing the Umayo lagoon, located at a short distance from Puno. This site was a burial ground for the Pucara, Tiahuanaco and Ccolla pre-Inca cultures that lived in the region in different times, long before the Inca expansion. The tower-like structures known as Chullpas, which symbolized life and birth, are ancient and impressive tombs from the pre-Inca period that served as burial places for chiefs and important people. Later the site was inhabited by the Incas, who made their own version of these towers. That is why there are two types - the rough, smaller pre-Inca towers, and the smooth, larger ones made by the Incas. The biggest tower took about 50 years to be made and consists of rocks weighing anywhere from 2 to 6 tons. An interesting site to visit that combines archaeology, history and rustic landscapes.

Mountain biking to Inca Anatawi (1/2 day)

A high demanding difficulty level excursion where you take an approximately two hour ride on mountain bike through the communities around this area of Lake Titicaca, towards Inca Anatawi; chosen name for the remains of an Inca Trail built on the edge of a rocky mountain. The ascending up the Inca Trail is moderate and may have some difficulty after riding the bike; the view from the top is privileged and nearby, some seats were finely carved into a rock. After the descent you may take some refreshing snacks to recharge the energies spent and return by private car back to the hotel.

Inca Anatawi, Amaru Muru, Juli and Pomata (1 day)

The excursion begins visiting Inca Anatawi, taking a car heading towards the south of the Titilaka refuge and then a moderate climb on foot to a rocky mountain, to reach an interesting Inca Trail remain where some polished stone seats were finely carved in large rocks, a vantage point for enjoying the panoramic view of the vast lake. After the descent, visit the local community for a brief rest and view their colorful textiles. Continue the journey south to visit the doorway of Aramu Muro, believed to be an inter-dimensional portal by local shamans. Then, visit the beautiful colonial churches of Juli and Pomata, which were the center of evangelization of the highland plateaus. The churches brag striking architecture, gold-leafed altars, still maintaining remarkable paintings from the viceroyalty era and massive bells that still toll up to today.

This morning you will be met by your guide to continue by private vehicle to Colca, approximately 5 hours outside Arequipa. Explore the region and perhaps you will see Andean condors soaring as you gaze down to the river below from various look-out points
